Neck Lift Surgery Walnut CreekA commonly asked question among many patients who walk through my door is ‘What’s the difference between a facelift and a neck lift?’ Typically, that’s followed up with a prompt ‘Which is right for me?’ While it’s nearly impossible to determine which procedure you’ll benefit from the most without an in-person evaluation, I’ll do my best to lay the groundwork here.

To start, it’s important to note, for many men and women, it isn’t necessarily an ‘either, or’ situation. The procedures are complimentary – they work well together.  When someone looks at you they see your face and neck together so if there are issues with your neck and not your face – you can address just the neck (and vice versa).  But, if both need work, the question is, will you look natural if only one is treated?

A facelift or neck lift can be done on their own to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, and more. The procedures can also be performed alongside one another for a harmonized look with only one recovery period. Today, we’ll take a closer look at both procedures. At your in-person consultation and evaluation, I’ll go into each more in-depth.

What Does a Lower Facelift Address?

A facelift treats the lower face (cheeks to jawline) towards the forehead resulting in a more youthful appearance. Everything from wrinkles to sagging skin can be corrected on the cheek, jowls, and jawline. Facelifts can take anywhere from 2-4 hours to complete with a recovery time of about 1-2 weeks. Results are long-lasting, and facelifts are often said to take 10 – 15 years off your facial appearance.

What Does a Neck Lift Address?

A neck lift is performed similarly to that of a facelift. However, excess skin is lifted below the chin rather than towards the upper region of the face. A neck lift can address ‘turkey waddle,’ excess fat under the chin, and improve bothersome vertical neck bands. Your neck lift procedure may take anywhere from 1-2 hours and can be done in combination with liposuction for more dramatic results. Most patients say they look and feel 10-15 years younger after their neck lift.

What’s Right for Me?

The only way to determine what cosmetic procedure is right for you is through a face to face consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon such as myself. Although age is not a defining factor, patients who are in their 30s or younger may achieve desired results solely with a neck lift. Men and women in their 40s-50s can likely benefit from a facelift on its own. Typically, when patients reach their 50s a combination procedure is recommended for an optimal outcome.

So, you’ve had breast surgery and you’re understandably anxious to get back on the court. However, breast augmentations require recovery time. Tennis is considered a strenuous activity that uses your entire body. If you’re not careful, overhead stretching and serving can prolong your healing process, and the high impact nature of the sport can put strain on your breasts. It’s important to closely follow your post-surgical instructions to avoid infection, increased scarring, and other potential complications.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

No two women are identical. The size and placement of your implants will partially determine how quickly you’ll recover from your surgery. Although downtime can vary greatly from person to person, you’ll probably begin to feel more like yourself 2 weeks post surgery, and there will be some tightness and discomfort up to six weeks after surgery. Just because you’re feeling a little better doesn’t mean it’s the right time to jump into your old exercise routines. Heed your body’s warnings by not rushing things. It will tell you when enough is enough.

When Can I Exercise after Breast Augmentation?

Exercise, when done in moderation, can increase blood flow and promote proper healing. That being said, you’ll need to work up to your old routines slowly. In most cases, you can start with short warm-up sessions around 4-weeks post-surgery. Mini-volleys that don’t require much stretching should be perfectly fine. Later, you can work yourself up to simple groundstrokes while wearing a supportive or compressive garment. It’s natural to feel a ‘pulling’ sensation at first which should go away after a while as your breasts naturally settle into their new position.

Your first game should be with a non-stressful group. Enjoy a few relaxing games of tennis with friends until you feel more comfortable. Sooner than later, you’ll be playing tennis without thinking twice about your new breasts!

A good target to be fully back in the game is 6 weeks after surgery.

Keep in mind that every patient is unique and I will create an individual recovery plan, including your return to tennis, that is customized to your needs.

Facelift Walnut Creek, CAA facelift is a serious surgical procedure that requires both artistry and skill. As your board-certified surgeon, it’s my duty to deliver optimal results and help restore your natural beauty. There are things you can do as a patient to ensure your recovery goes as quickly and as smoothly as possible. Spend a little extra time preparing so when the time comes, you can focus on yourself.

Two-Weeks Prior to Surgery

You may be surprised to learn just how much you can do in the weeks before your scheduled appointment. This is the perfect time to arrange for transportation and after-care help.

You may ‘feel fine’ in the hours following your surgery, but it takes time for the full effects of anesthesia to wear off. It’s important to make sure someone is available to drive you home. (A backup is a good idea too!)  The vast majority of my patients spend the first night in the hospital with a private nurse, so you’ll need transportation home the day after your surgery as well as the day of your surgery coming to the hospital.

While not essential, it is nice to enlist the help of a spouse, family member, or friend to stay with you for a day or two after the surgery when you return from the hospital.  You’ll be in the hospital, in a private room with a private nurse, for the first night following your surgery, and then you’ll return home.  You will be self sufficient, and many of my patients are home alone after their night in the hospital, but even little things like using the restroom, dressing, or walking upstairs can be tedious tasks immediately following your treatment. You may also want to plan on help with childcare and pet care for 1 week post-surgery.  We can also arrange for a private nurse or attendant to stay with you at home after surgery.

You’ll be asked to stop smoking (all forms of nicotine and marijuana), avoid Aspirin and other potential blood thinners which can hinder the healing process. I’ll give you a full list of medications to steer clear of at your consultation.  Edible cannabis products are acceptable, but discuss this with Dr. Barnett in advance of your surgery.

All lab tests should be turned in two-weeks prior to your facelift surgery. Payment should also be finalized at this time.

One-Week Prior to Surgery

This is the ideal time to take care of any loose odds and ends. Getting your recovery area prepared allows you to exert minimal effort and enjoy maximum comfort throughout your recovery period. Pre-cooking meals, decluttering your home of potential obstacles, and pre-planning your post-surgical wardrobe are all good ideas. Compile non-strenuous entertainment (books, magazines, DVDs, etc.) for the first week following your surgery so you can spend your recovery time doing what you’re supposed to…relaxing and recovering (and catching up on all those “binge-watching” shows you’ve wanted to watch… but haven’t had the time!)

Pick up the medications I’ve prescribed one-week before your appointment.

One-Day Prior to Surgery

Now’s the time to double-check with your designated driver.

Your evening routine should include a light schedule. Washing your hair thoroughly can help prevent the potential for infection. You’ll also be encouraged to avoid alcohol and get a good night’s rest the evening before your appointment. Do not eat any food or water 8-hours prior to your surgery – for most patients that means nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

Day-Of Surgery Preparation

Be on time for the surgery, so you’ll need to wake up early, and build in extra time for the following routine.  Don’t apply lotions, perfumes, hair products, or makeup on the day of your procedure. You can brush your teeth but do not swallow any water. It’s vital that your stomach be empty at the time of your surgery. Plan to arrive 2 hours early to complete paperwork during the check-in process. Bring any medications you’ve been taking (prescription and otherwise).  If you are taking routine medications in the morning, you should have discussed this with Dr. Barnett – some medications should be continued even the morning of surgery (with just a sip of water.)  Any questions, call us to confirm.
