What to Look for in a Plastic Surgeon

Choosing the right surgeon for your upcoming procedure is critical to achieving an optimal outcome with natural-looking results. It takes great artistry and skill to bring balance, harmony, and symmetry to the face and body. It’s a process that takes careful consideration but is well-worth the end-result once you find a surgeon you connect with.

If you were to do a quick Google search, you’d probably come up with a dozen or more plastic surgeons in your area alone but not all are created equal. Some are more qualified than others to give you the results you want. Today, we’ll go over a few things to help you narrow down your search for the perfect plastic surgeon.

Credentials, Credentials, Credentials

Credentials cannot be overstated as an essential part of your hunt for a plastic surgeon. You want someone with skill and experience if you’re going to maximize the benefits of your surgery.

Board Certification – A surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) practices the latest, most advanced surgical techniques and has undergone years of rigorous schooling and medical training. ABPS-certified surgeons are committed to continued education and follow strict codes when it comes to ethics and safety. Before being considered for the certification, a doctor must undergo at least 6-years of surgical training after completing medical school. Dr. Barnett holds a lifetime certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has taught board certification courses for surgeons preparing to take the rigorous American Board of Plastic Surgery qualifying examinations.

But that’s not the whole story.

Academic institutions – Make sure your surgeon has attended the finest academic institutions. That includes college, medical school, and residency. It makes sense that a surgeon with a consistent pattern of acceptance at top training institutions is a consistent top performer – and consistency is very important. Dr. Barnett attended Yale University as an undergraduate, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and did his post graduate internship and residency in General and Plastic Surgery at Stanford University Medical Center.

Specialty Training and Specialization – There are many sub-specialties within plastic surgery. An excellent hand or burn surgeon may not have the experience and artistic eye that makes for a great facial or breast surgeon. Advanced training beyond a plastic surgery residency is extremely helpful, and a lifetime commitment to a specific sub-specialty results in deep experience and expertise in that sub-specialty. Dr. Barnett completed an advanced fellowship in cranio-facial surgery and a world wide traveling fellowship, working with the finest aesthetic (cosmetic) plastic surgeons in North and South America, Europe, and Asia.

Artistry – Technical skills are essential, but an artistic eye is often the difference between a technically excellent result and a beautiful result that is both technically excellent and artistically natural and harmonious. Dr. Barnett taught anatomy classes to art students while in medical school and is an accomplished painter and sculptor.

Social Proof

While a referral is best, previous patient testimonials are a good way to see your surgeon’s level of skill. Look for happy patients that would recommend their surgeon to a friend or family member. Specifically, scan testimonials for patients that have already undergone the procedure you’re interested in having done.

Along with referrals and reviews, make sure to review before and after photos. You’ll get to see first-hand what your surgeon is capable of. An experienced surgeon should have plenty of pictures available online and in-office. When looking at photos, seek out post-surgical scars as well as results that are not “overdone”. Are the results similar to what you’re looking to achieve? Are they consistently balanced and natural?

Customized Procedures

A skilled surgeon understands that there’s no cookie-cutter answer for every patient. What a patient finds aesthetically pleasing can vary based on gender, ethnicity, and personal  preference. Your surgeon should have the adaptability to give you the results you want based on your specific concerns and end-goals.

Compassionate, Patient-Centric Care

Your surgeon is someone whom you will be working closely with over a span of months. They should be someone you feel openly comfortable talking to about the most intimate matters. A quality surgeon will listen first, suggest potential options, and walk you through every aspect of your procedure from start to finish all in a judgment-free environment. Also make sure the office is staffed with experienced people who understand the process thoroughly and are empathic. It’s not likely that your surgeon will answer his or her office phone themselves. When you call or talk to someone in the doctor’s office, you want that someone to understand what you’re going through, what you aspire to, and what you need now!

Dr. Barnett is a board-certified surgeon with the skill and expertise necessary to help you achieve the best possible outcome. He is happy to meet with you to discuss all of your surgical and non-surgical options in-depth. Dr. Barnett has already helped thousands of happy patients throughout his lengthy career and is ready to do the same for you.

Upper Vs. Lower Eyelid Lift

Blepharoplasty, which can refer to either an upper or lower eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure designed to reverse the visible effects of aging of the upper face. In our culture, we are taught to “look people in the eye” so we become very good at noticing even minor signs of aging. Our eyes are the first thing people see and they are critical for making the best impression. If your eyes make you look older, tired, stressed, or angry, you may be a good fit for blepharoplasty surgery.

Depending on your age, specific concerns, and severity of your condition, you might be better suited for one procedure over the other, or both. During your in-person consultation, we’ll go over your options in-depth and customize a treatment plan to help you meet your anti-aging goals.

Upper Eyelid Lift

Upper blepharoplasty is the most commonly requested type of eyelid surgery. The outpatient procedure can be done for both aesthetic reasons and medical purposes. During surgery, small easily-concealable incisions are made along the natural creases of the upper lid. If necessary, fat pads are reduced, underlying muscles are tightened, and excess skin is removed. The entire procedure takes less than 1 hour and is done either local or general anesthesia – usually based on the patient’s wishes.

Recovery from an upper eyelid lift is relatively easy, but does require several days off work. Most patients are able to return to their day-to-day within a week, but it may take 1-3 weeks for most or all of the bruising and swelling to disappear. Patients in non-customer facing jobs generally return to work within a week – if you’re job involves a lot of personal interaction with clients, you should plan a minimum of two weeks. Dr. Barnett recommends that if you are having your eyes done for a special occasion like a wedding where may photos will be taken, that you allow six to eight weeks of recovery.

After an upper blepharoplasty, you can expect a more youthful, well-rested appearance. In many cases, the surgery will produce lifelong results.

Lower Eyelid Lift

Lower blepharoplasty can be done solely on its own or paired with an upper eyelid lift. The procedure is slightly more complex but still may be done under either local or general anesthesia. Throughout the one hour procedure, Dr. Barnett addresses fatty bags, excess loose skin, and hollows below the eyelid at the eyelid cheek junction.

As with an upper eyelid lift, you can expect to take several days to weeks to adequately heal and to produce your best appearance. Patients can reduce the appearance of puffy, tired eyes producing a more youthful and vibrant appearance with the help of a lower eyelid lift. The procedure often lasts a lifetime thanks to advanced surgical techniques.

What’s Right for You?

Many patients opt to combine upper and lower eyelid lifts for enhanced results with a single recovery. The best way to determine your best plan, based on your individual needs and expectations, is through a consultation with a board-certified surgeon with expertise and deep experience with facial and eyelid surgery such as Dr. Barnett. Together, you and your surgeon can create an anti-aging plan designed to meet your short and long-term goals.

Breast augmentation is the world’s most commonly performed cosmetic surgery, and with careful planning, recovery is typically quick and easy. Thousands of women have the procedure each year to increase the size and enhance the shape of their breasts. Whether you’re bothered by underdeveloped breasts or would like to boost breast size after pregnancy, an augmentation can help.

Recovery times can vary based on a large number of factors. Your overall health, incision type, placement, and even size, of your implant can all play a role in how much time you’ll need to heal. For example, larger breast implants may stretch overlying skin making recovery slightly longer. However, there is a general rule of thumb I give patients when planning their augmentation.

Recovery: Week One

Breast augmentation is done as an outpatient procedure meaning you can go home the same day. However, you’ll need to have a friend or family member drive you home. It’s a good idea to have someone stay with you for 24 hours as you “come down” from the effects of general anesthesia. Remember, even small tasks may seem difficult immediately following surgery.

Pain and swelling will be at their worst several days post-op. Typically, swelling peaks on the 4th day following surgery. Prescription medication will be given during this time to minimize any discomfort. You’ll need to take several days to rest up after your breast augmentation. After 24-hours, you should and can move around the house every several hours to promote blood circulation. It’s ok to take a walk outside, but don’t push it!

The majority of women start to incorporate normal activities into their routine in about 3-7 days. Depending on your day job, most patients return to school or work on the 4th postoperative day. Women with more physically strenuous jobs should consult with their surgeon before getting back into the swing of things. You will continue to wear post-surgical garments throughout the first week or two after surgery.

Recovery: Week Two

You should feel more comfortable during week two of recovery. You may continue to tire easily, however, most activities can be resumed without difficulty. Post-surgical garments should be worn day and night as recommended. Many women are anxious to get back into their normal routine as quickly as possible after surgery. But be aware, pushing yourself too hard can prolong the healing process and increase the risk for potential scars.

Lifting after a breast augmentation is a no-no. You’ll be advised to refrain from lifting anything over 10-pounds for about 2- 3 weeks. You can return to the gym after a week, but initially go slow. Gradual weight limits will increase over time. By three weeks you can return to full activity without limitations assuming you’ve just had a breast augmentation. If you’ve had an augmentation and a lift, the time to full activity is six weeks. Closely following your personalized recovery plan during this time is essential for a speedy healing process.

Most women feel more like themselves about 4-6 weeks following their breast augmentation. The majority of post-surgical swelling will have subsided, and the results of your procedure will become evident. Final results from augmentation surgery can take 6-12 months as your breasts “settle” into their new position.

Dr. Barnett provides customized written instructions both before surgery and at your first post-operative visit. The instructions at the first post-operative visit include information not only on routine physical activity, but detailed information on breast exercises to assure the best possible result, information on medications, and on follow on breast examinations and care.
