Is It Possible to Re-Size and Re-Shape Your Nipples and Areola?
Published on October 12, 2019 by Andrew Barnett

Every woman has a specific goal in mind when it comes to what her ideal contours are. One woman may come into our office seeking a breast enlargement, while another might be better suited for a lift procedure. The size, shape, and projection of the nipple and areola is also a common concern among many women. The good news is, it is possible to re-size your nipples and areola in a way that’s more aesthetically pleasing and natural to your overall breast contours.
Nipple and Areola reduction surgery is a relatively simple procedure. It can be done as an isolated procedure in-office or paired with various other breast enhancement procedures to achieve your desired outcomes. Through advanced surgical techniques, we’re able to sculpt breasts that are more symmetrical, youthful, and have a natural perkiness.
What Is Nipple Areola Correction?
Nipple correction is a highly customized procedure. During your in-person consultation, we’ll discuss all of your options including nipple-areola reduction, re-shaping, and in some cases, repositioning. You can opt to reduce the diameter of one or both areolas according to your preferred aesthetics. The nipple can be reduced in projection and thickness. Inverted nipples, nipples that do not project at all (and may actually be “inside” your breast) can be brought out to allow for a more natural projection. Double nipples, or split nipples, can be sculpted into a single, nipple. Low positioned nipple-areola, which may in fact point downward, can be repositioned so that they point forward, providing a more perky appearance. In general, downtime is minimal with nipple-areola surgery allowing you to get back to your normal routine almost immediately.
When nipple-areola correction is your sole concern, the procedure is often done in-office with a local anesthetic. The procedure often takes less than one hour, and because there is no general anesthesia or sedation (just local anesthesia,) you’ll be able to drive yourself home immediately thereafter. Women that choose to pair nipple-areola correction with another procedure (breast enlargement, reduction, or breast lift) can do so without any additional recovery.
What are the risks with Nipple Areola Correction?
While all surgical procedures have some risk, Nipple Areola correction is generally extremely safe. At your consultation, we will discuss the risks particular to the procedure you desire, and the goals you hope to attain. Issues like scarring, sexual sensation and breastfeeding are very important. Anticipated changes with aging, weight gain or loss, and the use of medications that include hormones, such as oral contraceptives, can all change your nipple-areola complex. Changes to the underlying breast from surgery or pregnancy will also be discussed. I can assure you that you will be fully informed, and therefore best equipped to make the right decision.

Am I A Candidate for Nipple Areola Correction?
Many patients can benefit from nipple-areola correction including both men and women. If you’re uncomfortable with the way your nipple or areolas look or feel, the procedure might be right for you. As a general rule, because women’s breasts are still developing into their early 20s, nipple correction is not recommended until later in life. Men, who often have embarrassing developmental issues, can achieve their desired results as early as their late teens.
What Results Can I Expect?
After nipple-areola correction, you’ll see an immediate overall improvement to the size, shape, and projection of your areolas. Continued improvement will occur as any post-operative swelling dissipates in 1-2 weeks. Generally, patients can get back to work immediately, and most of their normal activities within 2-weeks. Surgical healing always produces a scar, but with excellent plastic surgical technique, scarring typically improves substantially over time.
Although results can vary significantly, most patients that undergo nipple-areola correction note an improved sense of self-confidence. At the time of your initial consult, I’ll work with you to create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals.
